A squad of U.S. Marines becomes the last line of defense against a global invasion.
Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone.
I quite enjoyed Battle Los Angeles (BLA).<br/><br/>The plot is like most other alien invasion movies - the aliens will look over-powering and unstoppable, and eventually their one weakness will be found.<br/><br/>The first 20 minutes or so is standard movie-making faire for a movie with a large cast - it is spent introducing the range of characters. Then the action begins, and rarely ceases for the remaining 80 or so minutes.<br/><br/>In many respects it is VERY like the movie Independence Day except with a gritty ground war instead of a &quot;cleaner&quot; air war.<br/><br/>If you can set aside the too-frequent corny lines about heroism, the special effects and scares are worth watching.
The introductions to the character are short, some characters have such a small role before dying. However, you get the necessary information for character development by way of quick military-style preoperative intros before being dragged along for an amazing action ride as the Marines take on the enemy in Los Angeles.<br/><br/>The producers don&#39;t pander to over introduction to anything, in fact the movie begins in the midst of the battle, before backing out to the 24 hours before the alien attack. It&#39;s now, it&#39;s news-breaking; you get a sense of urgency throughout the entire movie. <br/><br/>Spoiler: I rarely need to see the &#39;monster&#39; to enjoy a movie so I was more than satisfied that this was a movie that didn&#39;t become about the &#39;monster&#39;…it&#39;s about the battle to save human life from an alien invasion. If you&#39;re paying attention to the news reports and conversations, you&#39;ll understand the &#39;monster&#39; in this movie, and the desperate need to defeat &#39;it&#39;; they are alien, they are built for battle, they want our water, they&#39;re here to take what they need. <br/><br/>I truly enjoyed this movie; don&#39;t let critics keep you away! It&#39;s a sci-fi/action/adventure/drama bomb waiting to be dropped. You&#39;re in for a great ride. <br/><br/>My only advice is - use the bathroom before the movie and don&#39;t drink too much &#39;cuz you&#39;ll be glued to your seat; you won&#39;t want to miss anything!
It really is just sensory bombardment, and in two dimensions you have even less of a grasp of what's happening and of what you're looking at than the poor bastards on-screen.
Nantz, Imlay, Lockett, Harris, Adukwu and Santos are the only survivors.
